  GPS Based Monitoring System

GPS-Based Monitoring System Operation

The FAA Technical Center managed GPS-Based Monitoring System (GMS) provides operators with the flexibility of conducting monitoring during regularly scheduled flights or special test flights in all geographic areas. The operational flexibility is provided by the GPS-Based Monitoring Unit (GMU). Trained specialists will install the GMU in a manner transparent to crew operations.

Components of the GMU include:

  Laptop computer
  Two shielded GPS antennas
  GPS Receiver
  Power adapters
  Test-box for storage of components

The GMU weighs approximately 37 pounds and is easily transported on a standard luggage cart.

Why Monitor?

          Required by ICAO Doc 9574
          Monitoring is an effective means of verifying aircraft height-keeping performance.

GMS Monitoring Flights

          Scheduled, Ferry, or Special
          Straight and Level while flying FL 290-410 for 30 minutes
          GPS, Mode C Data, and Met Data should be available for successful monitoring



Monitoring Methods

          Global Positioning System (GPS)-based system (GMS)
          The GMS is the only available means for monitoring aircraft in the Pacific Region.
          Ground based height monitoring units (HMUs) located at Strumble, Wales and
            Gander, Newfoundland
